As part of its commitment to building a greener future, EU4Green is actively focusing on the promotion of sustainable agriculture, understanding its intrinsic connection to soil, air, biodiversity, water protection and climate change adaptation.
EU4Green prioritizes the efficient management of nutrient and manure flows, particularly through the implementation of the Nitrates Directive This EU directive aims to protect surface and ground water from pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources. Regardless of the differences in agricultural practices across the region, individual solutions tailored to each economy’s specific circumstances and requirements will be sought.
To support climate change adaptation in agriculture, EU4Green is committed to analyze and improve strategic approaches, which will be examined with the assistance of the Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group (SWG) in South Eastern Europe. Furthermore, EU4Green will focus on preventive measures for sustainable water use in agriculture by encouraging farmers to adopt practices that increase water efficiency and exploring options for water storage. By this EU4Green is helping agricultural systems to become more resilient to climate change.
The EU4Green project also emphasizes the importance of Agri-Environmental Indicators (AEI) for robust monitoring systems. AEIs are used to measure the environmental impact of agricultural practices, providing valuable data to inform policy and decision-making by showing progress and developments. This aligns with the project’s goals to promote environmentally friendly and organic farming. By driving these changes, EU4Green supports the transition towards a more sustainable, greener future for the Western Balkans.
