The world of nature largely depends on the human factor, especially regarding the conservation of biodiversity. Therefore, the safeguarding of biodiversity in the Western Balkan region is also of great importance. The Western Balkans are engaged in efforts to implement EU Nature Directives, striving to balance the demand for development with the necessity for environmental conservation.
The EU4Green project has placed its focus on floodplains in protected areas, as they are exemplary for other ecologically important habitats and measures and activities for their protection can be transferred. Therefore, one exemplary site in each of the six Western Balkan economies will be identified, relevant data will be compiled, and project-specific geodatabases will be built. The data gathered will be used to draft or update the Standard Data Forms of the selected sites, and to devise a set of objectives and measures for each particular field of interest, from conservation to connectivity, Nature-based Solutions, and invasive species management.
This integrative and focused approach serves as a model for other regions seeking to protect and enhance their unique biodiversity. It underlines the necessity of merging economic and social needs with environmental considerations.
Furthermore, EU4Green will provide support to the Western Balkan economies in the conservation of the precious diversity of species, habitats and ecosystems, including endemic species and areas of pristine nature. Through transboundary activities and cooperation, EU4Green endeavours to create a joint force in the Western Balkans to protect biodiversity in accordance with EU legislation.
