While the Sofia Declaration lays the foundation for addressing water challenges in the Western Balkans, significant efforts and resources are still required to improve the region’s alignment with EU water standards. The EU4Green project serves as a vital step toward bridging this gap and ensuring a sustainable future for the Western Balkans.
To address these issues, the EU4Green project has prioritized actions in three areas: water monitoring, Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive implementation, and Nitrates Directive implementation.
Monitoring is crucial for integrated water resources management and sustainable water management. Workshops and training on network design, sampling, assessment procedures, and reporting will be provided through the project.
The Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive aims to protect water environments from the adverse effects of urban wastewater discharges. The EU4Green project will strengthen the implementation of the directive and offer workshops and trainings on sludge management, definition of roles and responsibilities, harmonization of parameters, data exchange formats, and development of data management procedures.
The Nitrates Directive seeks to protect water quality by preventing nitrates from agricultural sources from polluting ground and surface waters, as well as promoting good farming practices. EU4Green will apply a regional approach combined with bilateral work according to the individual needs of the beneficiaries, emphasizing cooperation across the water and agricultural sectors.
