North Macedonia is a landlocked country located in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, with a population of approximately 2.1 million people. It is known for its mountainous terrain, and the Vardar River running through its middle.

Recognized as an EU candidate state in 2005, North Macedonia signed the Sofia Declaration in 2020, enhancing its environmental strategies and prioritizing the Green Agenda in the Western Balkan region.

In recent years, North Macedonia has taken further steps towards environmental goals and a greener future, supported also by the EU und projects like EU4Green.
