Kosovo*’s Pathway to new Circular Business Models

OCT 21, 2023

Kosovo* is aiming for a sustainable circular economy and paths the way for new Circular Business Models. The next milestone will be a new guidance document by late 2023, which draws a landscape for Circular Business Models integration in Kosovo*. This initiative is supported by the EU4Green project, and represents a concerted effort to foster sustainable economic practices that align with broader environmental objectives.

Circular Business Models represent a departure from the traditional linear economy, focusing on the sustainability of resource use through reduction, reuse, and recycling. The integration of these models is particularly pertinent for Kosovo* as it seeks to improve waste management, enhance resource efficiency, and generate both economic and social benefits.

Collaboration is key to the initiative’s success, with Kosovo’s Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure (MESP), the Environmental Protection Agency of Kosovo*, and Environment Agency Austria coming together to provide tailored guidance to meet the country’s unique needs.

Ms. Lendita Sopa, a senior officer for Hazardous Waste Management at MESP, highlights the importance of the upcoming guidance document in relation to national policy:

This guidance document is an essential tool for the effective implementation of the Circular Economy Roadmap. It is designed to anchor the roadmap’s strategic vision into tangible business practices across Kosovo*.”

The guidance document will cover the following aspects:

  • An overview of circular business model principles and their application in the context of Kosovo*.
  • A strategic policy framework identifying sectors where Circular Business Models can be most effectively integrated.
  • Engagement strategies for key stakeholders to foster cooperation across different sectors and levels of governance.
  • Financial strategies and incentives designed to encourage the business community to adopt circular principles.
  • Policy recommendations that support the establishment and growth of a circular business environment in Kosovo*.

With this initiative for the adoption of Circular Business Models, Kosovo* is taking proactive measures to align with European Union environmental standards and to position itself for sustainable development and economic growth. The anticipated release of the guidance document at the beginning of 2024 is a key component of Kosovo*’s commitment to building a more resilient and sustainable economy.

TURNING CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES

Financed by the European Union and the Austrian government, EU4Green supports Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia in greening their economies in consultation with all relevant partners and in enhancing monitoring and reporting. The project is implemented by the Environment Agency Austria in collaboration with the governments, institutions, and EU Delegations in the Western Balkans, striving for a sustainable and prosperous future for the region.
