Dealing with Nitrates for the benefit of clean waters

As part of a series of first national in-person workshops in all six economies, this Nitrates Directive workshop was held in Belgrade (Serbia) and built on the information gained in the first regional Workshop in September 2023 and the information and documents received from the beneficiaries after the regional event.

The main objective was the inclusion a wider circle of stakeholders – Ministries of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, Ministries for Environment, Environment Agencies, Agricultural advisory services, Research Institutions – in the planning and implementation process. In coordination with the beneficiary, a roadmap for the further course of action in the project is being developed, coordination of deliverables and which trainings are required.

An introduction on the Nitrates Directive and an overview on the project progress was be given at the start by EU4Green experts from Umweltbundesamt – Environment Agency Austria, while beneficiaries provided presentations on selected topics. Better networking and communication between key stakeholders from the water and agriculture sector was enabled through discussions during the workshop.

EU4Green experts for Water Depollution will continue to organise workshops and cooperate with relevant experts, institutions and organisations in all six Western Balkans economies, to work towards implementation of the Nitrates Directive and improvement of water quality.
