Podgorica, Montenegro – October 8-9, 2024

The Green Budgeting Workshop, part of the EU4Green Recovery initiative, was held on October 8-9, 2024, in Podgorica. The event is a significant step towards accelerating the implementation of the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, marking the kick-off of green budgeting in Montenegro.

The content of the workshop was primarily delivered by the Federal Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Austria (MoF). The workshop featured expert insights on green budgeting principles, methodologies, and real-world examples from across Europe, including contributions from the European Environment Agency (EAA) and the World Bank. Topics ranged from the Austrian Green Budgeting methodology to case studies from countries like Greece, Kyrgyz Republic, and Georgia.

Although not a regional initiative, this workshop represents a milestone in advancing green budgeting across the Western Balkans, driving sustainable economic practices to tackle climate change. Given its importance, organizers aimed to provide the tools for Montenegro to elaborate the local action plan for green budgeting kick-off in the economy.

“We believe this event will help the Western Balkans align with the broader EU Green Agenda, positioning green budgeting as a powerful tool for its implementation and directing investments into greening the economy,” said Olga Zhminko, the workshop organizer from the EAA and the EU4Green Green Finance coordinator.
