The EU4Green project has launched a new technical manual designed to standardize the analysis of environmental contaminants across the Western Balkans. This guidance provides a harmonized framework for laboratories in the region to monitor soil, water, and air in strict alignment with European Union standards.

Aligning with EU Legislation

The document serves as a practical bridge for implementing key EU laws, including the Soil monitoring law, the Water framework directive, and the Ambient air quality directive. It outlines specific protocols for tracking a wide array of contaminants:

  1. Inorganic contaminants: Analysis of heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.
  2. Organic contaminants: Detection of pesticides, PAHs, and PCBs using advanced GC-MS and LC-MS techniques.
  3. Emerging contaminants: Specialized workflows for monitoring “forever chemicals” (PFAS) and microplastics.

The guidance builds on the success of regional training sessions held in Podgorica, Durres, and Skopje. By emphasizing rigorous quality assurance and the use of certified reference materials, the project ensures that analytical data is reliable and comparable across borders.

This isn’t just about sharing data; it’s about creating a regional environmental laboratory network supporting local expertise that gives policymakers the scientific ‘teeth’ they need to make real decisions that protect public health and our shared environment.
