BIODIVERSITY

Biodiversity conservation depends heavily on human action, particularly in regions facing increasing development pressures. In the Western Balkans, safeguarding biodiversity is essential to achieving a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability.

EU4Green Biodiversity‘s support includes:

  • Capacity-building and knowledge sharing on EU legislation on nature protection
    • Background: Habitats Directive, Birds Directive, Invasive Alien Species Regulation, Nature Restoration Regulation
    • Target groups: Competent authorities (ministries, nature protection agencies), field biologists
    • Measures: trainings, workshops & webinars, guidance documents with best practice examples
  • Promotion of the Nature-based Solutions concept
    • Background: Nature-based Solutions address societal challenges while delivering co-benefits for people and ecosystems. EU4Green encourages cross-sectoral collaboration, particularly with agriculture and green finance, to mainstream these approaches.
    • Measures: Community of Practice for NbS (linked to CSO participation), workshops & webinars, guidance documents, development of NbS objectives in pilot sites
  • Connectivity analysis for surroundings of pilot sites
    • Background: Protected areas harbor biodiversity but might suffer from fragmentation in their surroundings
    • Target groups: protected area management authorities
    • Measures: data analysis and report

EU4Green selected six pilot sites in the Western Balkans:

  • ALB: Korab-Koritnik Nature Park
  • BiH: Una River National Park
  • KOS*: Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park
  • MKD: Mavrovo National Park
  • MNE: Skadar Lake National Park
  • SRB: Kovilj – Petrovaradin marsh Special Nature Reserve

The training of biodiversity professionals, the development of conservation objectives and the conducting of connectivity analyses are all facilitated by these pilot sites. The project has placed its focus on floodplains in protected areas, as they are exemplary for other ecologically important habitats and measures and activities for their protection can be transferred.

In addition, the biodiversity pillar provided ad hoc support (e.g. compliance checks / expert support for improving Draft Laws on Nature Protection) and produced communication materials like the Transboundary Podcast Biodiversity . Through transboundary activities and cooperation, EU4Green endeavours to create a joint force in the Western Balkans to protect biodiversity in accordance with EU legislation.

* This designation is without prejudice to positions on status and is in line with UNSCR 1244/1999 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.
